In the past decade, ultra-distance cycling has skyrocketed in popularity. And events like the Transcontinental and the Trans Am Bike Race have changed the way many now think about what it means to race, and to be a “proper” cyclist. But the hardy adventurers who take on these epic events are still slightly elusive to those of us looking in from the outside.
So what does it take to push yourself to ride thousands of kilometres over a matter of days? In our new documentary series, Endurance, we follow three cyclists who are doing just that. And explore what they can teach those of us who aspire to take on bigger, bolder challenges.
In our first instalment, we meet endurance rider Laura Scott. She’s a well-known face on the UK endurance scene, having undertaken unsupported ultra-races including the epic Trans Am Bike Race among others. A natural-born adventurer, Laura is this year taking on the TransAtlanticWay – a 2500km unsupported (predominantly) road race around Ireland.

A relative newcomer to the endurance scene, he’s hit the ground running, having completed two Everests, a High Rouleurs Society challenge (10,000km of up in one ride) and an Audax Super Randonneur award. But all of those are mere training rides in comparison to his next challenge, the TransAtlanticWay – a 2500km unsupported (predominantly) road race around Ireland.

In the third instalment, we catch up endurance rider Chris Hall, who made his name on the endurance scene after completing his 107km for 107days challenge. Now taking on the UK National 24-hour TT Championships and the 1700km off-road Silk Road Mountain race, we find out what drives this all-rounder and what advice he has for those who want to rider longer distances.
